Snapshot
Youth Underground is a trademarked Swiss non-profit dedicated to fighting human trafficking by educating and empowering the youth. Founded under Swiss law (Articles 60 ff of the Swiss Civil Code), Youth Underground serves as a global platform for education, advocacy, and information-sharing. We seek to amplify the voices of young people in the fight against human trafficking, promoting them as agents of change and defenders of human rights worldwide. Youth Underground provides a safe space for the youth to learn about human trafficking, share knowledge, and participate in campaigns from around the globe. We believe that educating children and young people is the key to preventing human trafficking, and this commitment drives all our efforts.
1. THE YOUTH FOCUS
Children and young people are often the primary victims of human trafficking, with some as young as four years old. However, they are also powerful advocates against this crime, influencing their peers, parents, guardians, and teachers. As today’s change-makers, they play a crucial role in raising awareness and driving action. We actively involve youth in the conversation about human trafficking and in shaping the response to prevent it.
2. THE EDUCATION FOCUS
At our core, we believe that educating youth is the key to preventing human trafficking. Awareness starts with the younger generation, and we empower them by sharing the truth. Our approach to education goes beyond traditional academics; it’s a two-way conversation where adults and youth learn from each other.
Education is about understanding what truly matters to the youth and what they need to know. It includes emotional intelligence, empathy, respect, and compassion. By equipping the youth with the knowledge to recognize and prevent human trafficking, we empower them to navigate the world confidently and safely. When students feel secure in their schools and universities, it boosts their self-esteem and confidence, helping them realize their potential to shape the world they want to live in.
Ultimately, education provides the tools necessary to thrive beyond academics—in their communities, workplaces, and throughout their lives. While many call youth the leaders of tomorrow, we see them as the leaders of today.
3. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A “SAFE SPACE”
Youth Underground is a safe space where young people can freely express themselves and feel heard. We provide a platform for them to share their knowledge, news, and campaigns from around the world. Through peer-to-peer learning, youth are empowered to shape the world they want to live in and equip themselves with tools to prevent human trafficking and protect their well-being.
We encourage youth to speak up when they see something wrong. Our motto is “If you see something, say something.” We emphasize the importance of having trusted adults to talk to without fear of repercussions. We offer this safe space through email and social media, ensuring confidentiality and providing guidance whenever needed.
Education is key to understanding what matters to the youth. It builds emotional intelligence, empathy, and respect, empowering them to navigate the world confidently and safely. By learning to spot the signs of human trafficking, they can protect themselves and others. Education also boosts self-esteem and confidence, helping youth realize their power to shape their future and equips the youth with the tools to thrive beyond the classroom, in their communities, workplaces, and throughout their lives.
Child slavery is at an all-time high, with 5.5 million children worldwide trapped in human trafficking. These children, some as young as 4 years old, are forced into labor, sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, child soldiering, drug trafficking, begging, and child marriages. Despite these challenges, many young people are also becoming activists and change-makers in the fight against human trafficking.
Youth Underground aims to raise awareness about human trafficking in a way that young people can understand. Our goal is to educate people of all ages about the realities of human trafficking and the importance of every human life. By breaking the silence and making this issue part of everyday conversation, we can help end human trafficking globally.
